How long have you taught at IST?
I have been at IST for 7 years. This is the longest I have stayed in one place since I began working abroad 20 years ago. It says a lot for how much I enjoy being at IST, in Trieste, and life in Italy in general.
Describe IST in 3 words.
Determined, evolving, caring. The school, teachers, and students are constantly finding ways to develop, overcome challenges, and change in order to make our school and world a better place.
What is your favorite thing about the community?
There are so many things. I love the students for their curiosity and constant questioning of life (even when it gives me a headache!). I am grateful to the parents for their support and kindness; and I appreciate my colleagues for their enthusiasm and energy.
What are the typical characteristics of an IST student?
Curious, questioning, and caring.
What is your favorite memory at IST?
There have been special things every year, but one memory that I will never forget is the year we decided that excess student energy could be put to good use in running 100 kilometres. Watching the students grow stronger, learn patience and control, and show great determination was a wonderful experience. This, linked to our annual charity research project, when students prepare a presentation for the class about a charity they would like to support, has been rewarding. It is always an emotional time for the teachers as we see just how caring and passionate about the wider world young people can be.
What would you be if you weren’t a teacher?
I would lose myself in books and become a librarian or get lost outdoors and take photographs.
