High School
In 2006, the High School was added to the Early Childhood through Middle School sections and celebrated its first graduating class in 2011. The High School is a five-year program which matches the Italian national system in duration, running from Grade 9 to Grade 13. There is a high-school student population of approximately 100 students, with a maximum of 21 students in each grade.
IST recognizes the need for students to be equipped for an increasingly interconnected world, not only for employment but, more importantly, to exist in the world as global citizens capable of engaging with people from diverse cultural backgrounds with compassion and understanding. We aim to provide our students with a well-rounded education and a myriad of opportunities.

Curriculum
The IST High School Program is designed to equip students with an international learning environment, versatility of knowledge, and the capacity for individual growth. A low student-to-instructor ratio ensures a personalized learning environment where every student receives focused attention and innovative instruction. In addition, the school supports student preparation and access to globally recognized World Language external exams for college readiness, including the DELF (French), Goethe-Zertifikat (German), and DELE (Spanish).
Early High School (Grades 9–11)
In Grades 9 to 11, students engage in a rigorous six-area core—English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Italian, and World Languages—designed to build deep academic versatility.
In English Literacy, the curriculum transitions from identifying universal themes and allegories in Grade 9 to the complex study of dystopian societies, psychological manipulation, and colonial history in Grade 11. Students develop a sophisticated narrative voice by exploring diverse genres, including Elizabethan drama and 20th-century science fiction. The Social Studies program similarly expands in scope, moving from the impact of the Renaissance and the French Revolution to an analytical study of global government structures, population demographics, and the ethical use of renewable resources. Throughout these years, students are supported in preparing for their chosen World Language external certifications, ensuring they possess the high-level fluency required for the Advanced Honors pathways.
In Mathematics, students progress from basic algebraic expressions and geometric proofs to mastering quadratic functions, trigonometry, and advanced coordinate geometry. The Science curriculum provides a robust foundation in the scientific method, where students transition from Earth science and plate tectonics to the study of cellular biology, chemical bonding, and the laws of physics. Alongside their core studies, students cultivate specialized expertise through Technology and Research—focusing on data storage, digital ethics, and advanced spreadsheet modeling—and a choice of electives including 2D Art, Mandarin Chinese, and STEM.
Pre-University Years (Grades 12–13)
In Grades 12 to 13, the program shifts toward high-level specialization with the Honors and Advanced Honors pathways. This period is defined by intense academic rigor, reflecting the pace of first-year university courses and preparing students for College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Exams.
In English Literacy, students move beyond standard analysis to evaluate the specific purposes behind diverse genres—from transcendentalist essays to modern theatre—while connecting complex themes like religious studies and political movements across multiple eras. The Social Studies curriculum mirrors this complexity, requiring students to analyze the intricacies of Comparative Government and European History, fostering a high degree of critical thinking and the ability to present informed, multifaceted perspectives on global events. The World Language subjects focus on achieving B2-level fluency, enabling students to argue complex points and understand specialized texts in French, German, or Spanish. Students may choose to take the B1 or B2 CEFR level external examination in these world languages.
Mathematics lessons challenge students with Advanced Honors Calculus and Statistics, where they master everything from differential equations to complex data interpretation. Simultaneously, the Science curriculum alternates between Advanced Honors Chemistry and Biology, engaging students in the study of thermodynamics, equilibrium, and cellular processes.
A defining hallmark of the IST experience is the Senior Thesis, a capstone research project. Supported by the Research Design course, students spend their final two years conducting primary and secondary data analysis to produce an 8,000-word publication. This journey culminates in a formal presentation, equipping graduates with the sophisticated research, writing, and analytical skills necessary for success at the world’s most prestigious universities.
To further personalize their graduation pathway, students can select from a range of specialized electives, including Art Portfolio, Writing Lab, Latin, Mandarin Chinese II, and Physics II, which allow for deeper exploration in their areas of interest.

Team
The High School Team is comprised of dedicated, international educators who, with a low student-to-instructor ratio, provides the personalized attention necessary to guide students through the rigorous challenges of the Honors and Advanced Honors levels. From the foundational inquiry of Grade 9 to the defense of the Graduate Thesis in Grade 13, the team provides support for individual growth, ensuring our graduates are prepared for the complexities of an interconnected world.
Our academic program is further strengthened by a commitment to inclusivity; specialized assistance from English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Italian as an Additional Language (IAL) teachers is available for students still developing the required proficiency in English or Italian . Additionally, for students with specifically identified learning needs, our Learning Support service works collaboratively with teachers and families to provide the guidance necessary for students to reach their full potential.
A cornerstone of the High School experience is the IST University Counseling service, which provides comprehensive, two-year guidance for university applications worldwide. Starting in Grade 11, students receive personalized assistance with application essays, standardized test registration (SAT, AP, IELTS/TOEFL), and documentation management. By managing transcripts and letters of recommendation, the Center ensures students are thoroughly prepared for global application cycles and a successful transition to higher education.

Values
In the High School section, the values introduced in earlier years shift toward practical application. Rather than following a structured advisory program, students are encouraged to take more individual initiative as they prepare for life after graduation. This transition is characterized by a gradual increase in autonomy and a focus on community contribution.
The Student Council & School Life
The High School Student Council serves as the primary platform for students to voice their ideas and participate in the organization of school life. While the level of activity varies by year, the Council has been instrumental in shaping the school’s current identity—including past initiatives like the redesign of the school logo.
Student involvement typically manifests through:
- Event Coordination: Organizing “Spirit Weeks,” candygrams, and social activities that help build a sense of community.
- School Support: Students often volunteer to assist the Parent-Teacher Committee (PTC) or staff with school-wide events.
- Peer-Led Initiatives: Recent projects have included practical efforts to improve student well-being, such as sponsoring the provision of female hygiene products within the school.
Social Awareness & Fundraising
High School students at IST are expected to recognize their role within a broader global context. This is most consistently seen through their long-term commitment to Project for People and the Institute for Indian Mother and Child (IIMC) in Calcutta. Students manage a weekly brioche sale to raise the funds necessary to sponsor the education of a child in India. This is part of a larger commitment by IST, which currently sponsors 13 children through the NGO. In previous years, students have successfully organized and participated in service trips to assist the NGO in person. While these trips are not a guaranteed annual occurrence, they represent the level of commitment our students aim for. Beyond global initiatives, students also participate in fundraising for local organizations, such as AIRC, helping to maintain a connection with the local community.
Through these various clubs and activities, High School students learn that being a Global Citizen involves consistent effort and a willingness to contribute, preparing them to be responsible members of society.

Facilities
In our High School wing, the integration of advanced technology—including interactive smartboards and personal devices—serves as a catalyst for high-level academic inquiry. These digital tools allow for a dynamic and personalized classroom experience, tailored to meet the rigorous demands of Honors and Advanced Placement coursework. To support the independent study habits required for university success, students have full access to our specialized laboratory for scientific experimentation and a dedicated library, providing a quiet environment for the deep research and analysis necessary for their Senior Thesis.
Physical well-being remains a priority through our well-equipped gymnasium, which serves as the hub for Physical Education and competitive after-school athletics. Furthermore, we take full advantage of our unique location in Trieste, a renowned city of science. Our students’ education is extended through organized academic trips to world-class research institutions such as the ICTP, ICGEB, SISSA, and the Elettra Synchrotron. By connecting our campus facilities with these prestigious global centers, we ensure our graduates remain inspired, challenged, and deeply integrated into the international scientific and cultural community.

University Preparation
The majority of IST High School graduates choose to study at university immediately after graduation, and our curriculum prepares them for competitive entry into higher education worldwide.
The IST University Counseling Center provides comprehensive, two-year guidance and support for university applications, covering both Italian and foreign institutions. Starting in Grade 11, students receive a detailed Handbook and personalized assistance with application essays, standardized test registration (SAT, AP, IELTS/TOEFL), and setting deadlines. The Center manages all necessary documentation, including transcripts and letters of recommendation, ensuring students are thoroughly prepared for application cycles (like UCAS in Grade 13) and successful transition to higher education.
