The Middle School at IST encompasses grades 6-8. The program concentrates on mastery of basic academic skills while also encouraging individual interests, divergent thinking, world consciousness, and an enthusiasm for learning. A greater emphasis is placed on self-directed learning, quality of work, co-operative behavior and respect for the rights and feelings of others. The academic preparation allows students to pursue secondary level education options both locally as well as abroad. The curriculum
The curriculum is divided into Core Subjects and Additional Subjects. Core subjects are allocated 3 to 5 lessons per week and the pupil's achievement in the subject is evaluated. Student promotion is dependent upon the level of achievement in these subjects. Additional subjects are taught only 1 to 3 times per week and students are evaluated on their efforts. | A. A. Core Subjects I. ENGLISH LITERATURE
The English Literature program in the Middle School grades is based upon a reading anthology supplemented with opportunities for becoming acquainted with some of the great works in English and American Literature. Creative writing (e.g. poetry) and critical appreciation form an integral part of the curriculum. The objectives of the Middle School literature program are to introduce students to novels, short stories, plays and poetry and instill in them a love for literature, and secondly to develop the skill of literary analysis which leads to greater literary appreciation. II. LANGUAGE ARTS
The objective of the language program is to develop fluency in the various aspects of the English language - speaking, writing, oral and written comprehension, reading and spelling. A familiarity with and a correct use of basic English grammar is regarded as essential to the acquisition of this fluency. We also use technology, such as Internet sites and blogs to practice language arts lessons and communication. III. SOCIAL STUDIES
There are three main aspects of Social Studies with relation to Grades 6-8. The study of history helps students to develop an understanding of the past, its influence on the present and its implications for the future. The study of geography serves to develop an understanding of the relationships of people to their environment, a sense of place, and a sense of self in relation to personal, local, national and international location. Finally, the study of human relations between individual groups and societies and how their values shape our social systems incorporating elements of sociology, anthropology, economics, ethics and politics. The Social Studies curriculum will be supported and enhanced by visiting speakers representing various aspects of the community, by the celebration of National Days and by scholastic visits. IV. SCIENCE
At all grade levels stress is laid on practical skills, writing and reporting, experimental design, and hypothesizing. Open-ended problems and social and technological issues are included to encourage discussion. Scientific ideas are related to everyday life. Several different areas of science are studied throughout Middle School. V. MATHEMATICS
By the time students have completed the Elementary School Mathematics Program, they will have a solid foundation in basic number concepts and in using the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In the Middle School the focus is on introducing students to a wide spectrum of topics that will benefit all students and at the same time prepare able students for further and more in-depth study at the secondary to solving practical everyday problems is strongly emphasized in the program. VI . ITALIAN
The Italian program in the Middle School follows mainly that as established by the Italian Ministry of Education for the Italian State schools, in which the main stress is given to the formative value of the subject: that of developing an awareness of the Italian language, the mother tongue of the majority of our students, which must no longer be tackled instinctively, but with a greater knowledge, effort and study needed to enrich vocabulary and expression, analysis and linguistic coordination.
VII. THIRD LANGUAGE (FRENCH/GERMAN/SPANISH)
The three-year course of study is based on acquiring a fundamental knowledge of the third language in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students are taught to speak clearly, pronounce correctly and use appropriate volume, phrasing and pitch of voice. At a more advanced level students engage in conversations, dialogues, debates, or the discussion of ideas from literary excerpts. Listening skills are developed by using audio programs so that the students become familiar with different voices accents and pronunciations of those who speak that language in all areas of the world. Furthermore, but not less important, will be the acquisition of cultural knowledge. The students should understand the language not only as a means of communication but also as the structure of expression of a certain cultural and mental environment.
VIII. ARTISTIC SUBJECTS - ART
The IST course in art is designed to give students background in the creation and study of art. The actual studio process includes learning art's basic language which is the elements (line, shape, value, color and texture) and the principles (rhythm, balance, harmony, unity, contrast) of design. Students will explore these using both 2-dimensional (drawing, painting) and 3-dimensional (sculpture) means. - MUSICWe develop students’ musical skills thorough the use of their voice and modern music. All students will have the possibility to sing as a group and as an individual, during shows at the end of each trimester. - DRAMA
We improve our dramatic techniques working on our bodies, face and voice. Students write their scripts, they prepare sets and present children’s stories, Shakespeare works and video techniques. B. Additional subjects I. PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The aim of physical education is to promote through selected physical activity, certain physiological, psychological, and sociological competencies which enable each individual to establish and maintain the self realization and expression necessary for a pleasant and productive existence in our society.
II. COMPUTER STUDIES
In the elementary school pupils learn basic skills and develop important abilities which will allow them to solve problems later. These include keyboard, word processing, drawing and data collection skills, using a variety of simple and complex programs. The aim is to develop confidence in using the computer as a tool while engaging the child in simple, but enjoyable tasks. In the Middle School the computer is regarded as a problem-solving machine. Skills and abilities are further reinforced with advanced exercises. However, pupils are also given specific tasks, across all areas of the curriculum which may be completed with the aid of correctly-chosen software. These tasks include: 1) essay and letter writing; 2) newspaper publication; 3) the use of computers to analyze scientific experiments and to graphically represent results; 4) the use of computers to enhance art and design; 5) collection of information from a variety of sources using electronic means.
III. LATIN
Students in Grades 7 and 8 take Latin. The objectives of the course are to give students an adequate base in this subject to facilitate admission into Italian High Schools.
